Benefits of Insulating
your Home

At MPC Energy, we think of insulation as the ‘jacket for your home’, it is required to keep the cold out and the heat in.
Insulating your home is a long-standing and effective way of increasing your energy rating, keeping your home warm and your fuel bills down.

Types of Insulation

  • Loft Insulation

Around 25% of heat is lost through the roof. Loft insulation is a barrier of material installed between the joists or in the rafters and is a great way to improve heat retention and save on energy bills. Insulating an uninsulated loft with 270mm of loft insulation you will save you up to £590 on energy bills per year.

  • Room in Roof Insulation

Similar to loft insulation, room in roof insulation will act as a barrier to keep the heat down in your home where it belongs. If you are currently using your loft or attic space as a living area then we can secure the funding for RIR insulation. We can make sure that all areas are fully insulated; maximising the energy efficiency of the space.

  • Cavity Wall Insulation

Around 35% of heat is lost through uninsulated walls. Cavity wall insulation fills the gap between your external and internal walls, providing a barrier between the cold outside and your warm home. Adding this type of insulation is essential in saving energy and cavity wall insulation can help save you up to £690 a year on your energy bills.

  • Solid Wall Insulation

Solid wall homes are especially vulnerable to heat loss due to their design and construction materials. You’ve already paid to create the heat in your home and you can make sure it stays in there with solid wall insulation. MPC Energy has funding for solid wall properties and can secure it for your home for both Internal & External Wall Insulation.

  • Underfloor Insulation

Around 15% of heat is lost through the floor. Timber floors can be insulated by lifting the floorboards and laying wool insulation supported by netting between the joists. Insulating under the floorboards on the ground floor will reduce drafts in your property save you money every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the best insulation type for you. It largely depends on your home’s age and construction type, not to mention your budget and environmental concerns. Insulation materials like polyurethane foam are widely regarded for their high R-value (a measure of thermal resistance), making them efficient in various applications. For loft and attic spaces, glass and mineral wool offer a cost-effective option that is also easy to install. Using materials such as polystyrene boards, solid wall insulation can be highly effective in older properties without cavity walls.

MPC Energy can assist with selecting and installing loft, cavity wall, solid wall, room in roof and underfloor insulation. Before investing in insulation, you should evaluate the condition of your home’s existing insulation through a professional assessment. We can help you determine where insulation is needed and recommend the best insulation type for your home, considering your budget and any available grants that may influence your decision.

  • The cost to insulate a house can vary a lot, between £1,400 and £10,000. It depends on the type and extent of insulation required, as well as the property’s size and age. On average, installing loft or cavity wall insulation for a typical semi-detached house is usually cheaper than installing external solid wall insulation. Insulation costs also range significantly depending on the chosen materials, the specific project requirements and labour costs. However, government grants and other incentives may offset the initial installation expense.

  • Certain groups of homeowners and tenants may be entitled to free home insulation through various government schemes and initiatives aimed at promoting energy efficiency and reducing fuel poverty. Typically, those eligible for support include low-income households, individuals already receiving certain government benefits, older homeowners who meet the income criteria and those living in areas classified as fuel-poor or in homes with low energy efficiency ratings. If you are unsure of eligibility, we offer free loan and grant advice as well as energy assessments to see if you qualify for funding.

  • Responsible insulation is part of Scotland’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Aside from government schemes targeting low-income households or those in fuel poverty, there are additional insulation subsidies and financial incentives to encourage more of the population to make energy efficiency improvements. This includes initiatives managed by local authorities, regional agencies, and even major energy suppliers across the UK, including the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme, and the Local Authority Flexible Eligibility (LA Flex). The MPC Energy team can help you determine eligibility criteria, check the latest guidelines and offers, and apply for funding on your behalf for free.
